High targets

Al Mutawaa, 23, who is one of Abu Dhabi Racing’s junior drivers, has set his sights on a top-five finish at every round as he returns to the Junior World Rally Championship (JWRC) for his second campaign, which begins later this month with the opening event of the season, Rally Portugal, taking place between May 19-22.

Improved drastically

He will compete in a Citroen DS 3 R3 alongside co-driver Stephen McAuley, said of how he fared last year in the series: “I wanted to gain as much experience by finishing every event. However, though I did not finish some events, I learnt from my mistakes and towards the end of the season my pace improved drastically.”

Back in the rhythm

As to his ambitions, performance wise, for this year, Al Mutawaa said: “At the first round of the championship I want to settle in and get back in the rhythm as it has been six months since I was last behind the wheel. But my aim is to have top-five finishes at every round and possibly get podium finishes towards the end of the season.”

Comfortable

One regret Al Mutawaa has is that Rally Catalunya, where he finished fourth 12 months ago, is not on the schedule this year. “My favourite event was Spain because the surface was really clean and it felt like driving on a race track and hence I was comfortable behind the wheel which helped me get my best result of the season,” he recalls.

Strong field

Al Mutawaa is one of the returning drivers this season, with others including Norway’s Ole Christian Veiby, who finished runner-up last year and Slovak Martin Koci, who was third in 2014.
